Boston's Prudential Center - What a view!

If you're looking for a stunning place to spend an evening in Boston, then the Prudential Center is a fabulous choice. Known informally as "The Pru", the second-tallest building in Boston offers fine dining, a lounge (complete with live jazz band on a recent visit), and views to die for. What a place for an unforgettable romantic evening!

The Prudential Tower is 52 floors high, second to the John Hancock building in height. Unlike the latter, the Pru gives locals and tourists alike the chance to see Boston from above. On the 50th floor, there's an observation deck called the Prudential Skywalk. What I thought was fabulous, though, was the restaurant/bar on the 52nd floor - the Top of the Hub.

The boxy Prudential Tower is prominent on the Boston skyline, and its straight-forward rectangular architecture was not a hit with everyone. One architecture critic, Donlyn Lyndon, went so far as to call it "an energetically ugly, square shaft that offends the Boston skyline more than any other structure."

But once you're inside, who cares what it looks like from the outside? The views you get from the top are spectacular enough that I know I'll be happy to go back any time I'm in Boston.

Practical travel advice:

~ We went to the Top of the Hub in the evening for drinks, when a live jazz trio was playing. You can expect a minimum charge per person ($24/person when we were there). For us, that covered a few drinks and a shared dessert. It made a lovely evening's entertainment, so the charge was well worthwhile.

~ The Prudential Tower is located at 800 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02199. You can get here by foot, by car, or on either the Green or Orange Line. See directions...

~ For both the restaurant and the skywalk, you can find current hours, prices, menus, and other information at the Top of the Hub website....
